I think there’s a real temptation amongst us religious people to make a virtue of hypocrisy. To put a lid on the ugly reality of our lives, to wear a mask that will make us acceptable to our fellow religious people. But I also believe that there’s something freeing in removing our masks, acknowledging our neediness, admitting that we’re not ok.

I wrote a thing a few months ago called “I Don’t Have My Shit Together“.  I talked about a lot of these things — about how our need to appear perfect leaves us feeling isolated, about how “setting a good example” should be more about vulnerability than good behavior. When I wrote that, a lot of people commented and emailed me to tell me they felt the same way, and I realized I wasn’t alone.

So I decided to make a shirt for those of us who don’t have our shit together, for those of us who find freedom in admitting it to each other.
